PRAYER

Jesus said to his disciples:
“When you pray,
do not be like the hypocrites,
who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on street corners
so that others may see them.
Amen, I say to you,
they have received their reward.
But when you pray, go to your inner room,
close the door, and pray to your Father in secret.
And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.”

-Matthew 6:5-6

Prayer is one of the three pillars of Lenten practice.  Through prayer, we raise our hearts and minds to God in thanksgiving and praise.  Prayer is our “vital and personal relationship with the true and living God.”   During Lent, we place special emphasis on prayer and contemplation on the Passion and Death of our Lord through expressions of popular piety such as the Via Crucis (Stations of the Cross) and veneration of the Crucified Christ.
